TWEETING THE BLUES (based on BLUES FOR ALICE)
Don’t be deceived by the title! "Blues for Alice" is definitely a 12-bar blues, but not a traditional one by any means. Composed by Charlie Parker in 1951, Bird encorporated both bebop and blues language in the harmony, using major-7 chords for the I and IV, as opposed to dominant-7s, and adding extra harmonic movement with ii-Vs throughout. Having a good working knowledge of how a "Bird's Blues" is laid out, and techniques for navigating its harmonic movement when soloing, is a valuable and essential skill. Brent Jensen's "Tweeting the Blues" provides a great base to get started.
