“Celia” is one of pianist & composer Bud Powell’s many essential compositions. Recorded in 1949 with Ray Brown and Max Roach, it was released later, most notably on his 1956 album "Jazz Giant." This consummate bebop tune is most recognized by its fantastical melody with fleet 16th note triplet runs in a grooving medium swing tempo. Powell's bold double-time solo break as well as his phrasing and feel on the original recording are stand-outs for an artist who was clearly ahead of his time. Ryan Cohan's slightly more approachable but highly musical melody on "Just A Fact," takes advantage of Powell's unique harmonic movement and chordal chromaticism, creating what could be his own classic.
