Written in 1945 by Joseph Kosma for a French film, with lyrics in French by Jacques Prevert, “Les Feuilles Mortes” didn't find a foot in the American jazz scene until Johnny Mercer did English lyrics (turning it into "Autumn Leaves") a decade later. It quickly became, and has remained, one of the most performed tunes in jazz. Harmonically, we're introduced to minor ii/V/I progressions found throughout jazz, and it also utilizes the circle of fifths. It's a great tune for any musician to have in their toolbox as its popularity crosses many audiences. "Autumn Leaves" arrived at the end of the ‘Tin Pan Alley’ era and marked a transition in terms of harmony and song forms that had been popular for so long. This A-A-B-C form tune is done in every style and groove, from ballad to swing or latin feels.
