BEING ONE (based on BODY AND SOUL)
Johnny Green's "Body and Soul" has held an integral spot in the jazz canon for upwards of 90 years now, with it's countless recordings offering an amazing retrospective of the generational developments in jazz. Coleman Hawkins only touched on the melody while unfurling a towering solo on his legendary version from 1939, setting a precedent and a tradition that others have followed all these years. It's often presented as a feature tune for a musician who has "something to say," with its history alone lending a sense of gravitas to a performance, if approached in the correct way. John Coltrane, Billie Holiday and Dexter Gordon all created their own personalized versions of the ballad, while the Spanish pianist Tete Montoliu took it a whole different direction on his 1974 album, "Catalonian Fire," giving it a hard-swinging, almost big-band treatment with his trio.
